When I take flower shots, I often hold the camera down at flower level and shoot blind, because my joints prefer this to crouching down and peering in the viewfinder. It's a method that relies on trial and error, and results in many partial flower shots. This of course is one such shot, but I like the way the flower appears to be peeking around a corner.

This is the same as the factory shown on May 8. Until last year it was a working factory. Unfortunately, this part of town, though picturesque, doesn't get a lot of investment in renewal. The river is to the left, and the path follows what used to be a railway line. It must have been many years ago, though, for the tree to grow over the path like that. (Although the river has been eroding the soil around its roots at the same time as the tree has been getting heavier, so perhaps the tree fell towards the path at some point, rather than growing over it.)

In case anyone was wondering (as my husband was) yes, this is my own photo. It is my son's Darth Vader helmet, taken against a black background, then processed in high-contrast black and white. I have new software this year that I didn't have last year, so if you look at May 4, 2007, you will see a similar photo processed differently. I would not have been able to get this dramatic effect last year.

The temperature dipped to -2°C the other night, and we had frost. Magnolias don't like frost. Our tree, being out in the open, suffered. Other magnolia trees in our city, particularly those sheltered next to buildings, were unaffected.
